Nuestra Senora De Las Nubes

Nuestra Senora De Las Nubes
9. September 2008 - 27. September 2009

Two exiles on the run lose themselves in the wonderfully dark history of Our Lady in the Clouds, a country conceived by incest, brought up on lust, disciplined with terror and destroyed, in true Latin American style, by the enemy within.

A fantastically successful play throughout the whole of Latin America, this is the UK premiere, in a new translation by Andrew Hurley of a fascinating political multi-character two-hander about a mythical country, Nuestra Señora de las Nubes. Two exiles, a man and a woman, who may or may not know each other tell the rich story of the village's conception, birth, growth, decay and destruction. The story of Our Lady in the Clouds is, of course, non other than the story of Latin America and this play is in the great Latin American magic realist tradition.

Directed by Omar Elerian
Performed by the CASA 2008 company: Florencia Cordeu and Gergo Danke

REVIEWS

“ An enriching and politically charged play in the Magical Realist style. Florencia Cordeu and Gergo Danka inhabit a sequence of surreal characters with dexterity and tenderness... The real beauty of the piece comes from Omar Elerian’s fabulous direction … The overall effect is poetic and aesthetically delightful.” - Kate Jackson - What's on Stage - 3 STAR

“A fantastic showcase for the versatility of the two performers who would go from intense clowning to tragedy within the space of 5 minutes... It had one of the most interesting sets I have seen in a while” - Andy Marchant - RemoteGoat - 3 STAR

“A haunting play. Director Omar Elerian … marks touching moments with insight and imagination... Gergo Danka as Oscar give a commanding performance, and the atmospheric lighting by Adi Shimrony, from Israel added a touch of real magic to the production.” - Leon Conrad - RemoteGoat - 3 STAR

“A meandering yet beautifully thought-provoking piece which mixes magical abstract prose with dramatic, unexpected humour.” - Geoff Ambler - Reviewsgate

“... Omar Elerian’s elegant production is underpinned by an inescapable melancholy. Actors Florencia Cordeu and Gergo Danka are mesmerising and shapeshifting embodiments of memory, loss and unspoken anguish throughout these loosely connected sketches, but however beautifully drawn, this Spanish-language drama is almost too opaque to engage with...” - Tamara Gausi - Time Out - 3 STAR
